Scanner Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide
Scanner not detected or scan jobs failing? Check USB or Wi-Fi connection, scan software, permissions, drivers and device selection.
1. Confirm how the scanner is connected
For USB scanners, check the cable and port. For network scanners, confirm the scanner and computer are on the same local network.
2. Check whether the computer detects it
Open the operating system's scanner or printer settings. If the device is missing there, the problem is likely connection, driver or device registration related.
3. Test the scanning application
Try the operating system's built-in scanning tool or the manufacturer's scan software. If one works and another does not, the issue may be application-specific.
4. Check permissions and drivers
On some systems, privacy permissions or incomplete device software can block scanning. Confirm the appropriate device permissions and software are installed.
Before you change anything: If the printer is actively printing or moving, let the current job finish or cancel it from the queue. For physical clearing or cable work, power the printer down when the manufacturer's instructions call for it.
