Printer Paper Jam? Safe Troubleshooting Steps
Printer reporting a paper jam? Follow safe checks for visible paper, rear access, rollers, trays and false jam messages.
1. Stop the job and follow the printer's jam procedure
Do not force paper through rollers. If the printer is still moving, cancel the job and wait for the mechanism to stop.
2. Check accessible paper paths
Look in the input tray, output area and any manufacturer-designated rear access area. Remove visible paper slowly and in the direction recommended by the printer.
3. Check for small torn pieces
A tiny fragment can trigger a false jam message. Inspect only areas that the printer's documentation says are user-accessible.
4. Reset and test
After the paper path is clear, close all panels correctly and restart the printer. Send one simple test page before returning to a large print job.
Before you change anything: If the printer is actively printing or moving, let the current job finish or cancel it from the queue. For physical clearing or cable work, power the printer down when the manufacturer's instructions call for it.
