Printer Driver Problems: What to Check on Windows and Mac
Printer driver problems can cause offline status, missing printers and failed jobs. Use these practical checks before reinstalling everything.
What printer-driver problems look like
Typical signs include a printer that appears offline, disappears after a reboot, is detected but will not print, or creates jobs that remain stuck in the queue.
1. Check for duplicate printers
Old entries can remain after a router, computer or printer change. Identify the current device before removing anything.
2. Match the driver to the operating system
Windows and macOS use different printer software. Confirm the installed package matches the computer and printer model.
3. Reinstall only when necessary
Reinstalling drivers can help, but it should not be the first response to every offline message. First rule out network, queue and device-selection problems.
4. Test from a simple application
Try a basic text document or system test page. This separates printer configuration problems from application-specific issues.
Before you change anything: If the printer is actively printing or moving, let the current job finish or cancel it from the queue. For physical clearing or cable work, power the printer down when the manufacturer's instructions call for it.
Still not fixed?
If you've worked through the checks above and the printer still won't cooperate, SafeCode can provide remote troubleshooting for U.S. customers. We'll focus on the actual connection, software, driver and configuration problem rather than selling a particular brand.
